30 Rock Review

Over the course of the next few years, I am convinced that we are going to look back on 30 Rock as a whole and realize just how stunning the writing is. It often takes time, and distance, to really see something for what it is in its entirety. When Arrested Development was released on DVD, and then Netflix, we were able to fully comprehend how intricately weaved and well plotted the humor was. Jokes were sometimes planted a half a season before the punch line was delivered.

30 Rock, though different, has its own genius that is sometimes missed. We all agree, or at the very least fans of Fey and the series agree, that this is unequivocally smart humor. The rapid pace and consistent hilarity of the one-liners, brilliantly absurdist and pop-culture referential humor, meta self-awareness and satirical cultural commentary happen so quickly, though, that it's easy to forget that there was a long game being played here as well.

Case in point: “Kenneth, the man who lived forever.”

Fey layed the groundwork for that final “Kenneth is in fact an immortal” joke all the way back in Season 2. If you recall, in "Ludachristmas" we flash back to Kenneth’s “Wall Street days” 20-years prior, where other than his coiff, he looks exactly the same.
